Call for Real Election Modernization in 2013

Recently the Election Laws Committee at the State House put out a bill (H3647) with a lot of missing pieces.

Massachusetts consistently ranks near the bottom when it comes to having election laws that encourage voter confidence and participation.

The present bill only has online voter registration (a great reform) and a weak form of early voting.  That's basically it.  We're calling for pieces like pre-registration for 16 and 17 year-olds and post-election audits that give people confidence in election results to be put back in the legislation.  We're also advocating for a stronger early voting bill and for Election Day Registration.  We need to pass reforms that will encourage greater participation and confidence in our democracy.

2013 may already be the year in which the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act, but Massachusetts should take a stand and also make it the year in which our Commonwealth stood up for voters by passing truly comprehensive election modernizations.
