Dear Friend,
Exciting news - pre-registration and election audits are out of committee! All of the actions you have taken made a huge difference. We are one step closer to passing these bills into law this year.
The bills came out of committee with an "ought to pass" recommendation as part of an omnibus election bill called the Election Law Reforms Act of 2012. It includes pre-registration, allowing 16 and 17 year-olds to pre-register to vote so they're all set the day they turn 18 and election audits to be performed randomly in 3% of polling places to ensure that ballots are counted correctly. It also includes a provision to let voters fill out voter registration forms online and then print them, sign them, and mail them in. Lastly, the bill requires mandatory training for local election officials so they can keep current with state and federal law.
This is a big victory, will you sign our thank you note today?
MassVOTE will be working in the coming weeks to push for this bill to come up for a vote on both the House and Senate floor. We're not done yet -- but we just took a huge step forward.
Thank you,
Sara Brady
